Isolation and Community

Lighting Designer

"Isolation and Community" was an aural and visual immersive experience lead by Adam Mendelson. It featured 4 different sections, each section including music created by students of the UMBC Music Department and lighting designed by UMBC Theatre Department designers. The photo galleries below feature my lighting design for the two sections I was assigned to.

Supervised by Adam Mendelson, I created two distinct lighting designs for two of the sections, each around 8 minutes long.
Adam, myself, and another student worked together to create the light plot, featuring incandescent, LED, and moving lights, as well as a fog machine and a haze machine.

For my design process for both musical pieces I focused heavily on the what the musicians wanted to evoke from the music they created, as well as what they wanted to evoke in sections within the overall piece. After that I met with each of them to go over color associations with their music - any specific colors that came to mind while they created the music and sounds for their sections. Once the color palates were decided I started designing the lights remotely due ot the COVID-19 pandemic. New augmented reality (AR) software from Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc (colloquially known as ETC) allowed me to design everything from home, saving countless hours in the theater.
